Our curriculum is authentically the Montessori method, a trusty, proven approach and pedagogy which was created by Dr Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952).
Maria Montessori was born in Ancona Italy in 1870. Her father a soldier and civil servant and her mother a well – educated woman from a wealthy family.
Montessori studied to be a doctor at the university of Rome and was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree. She later went on to work in San Giovani Hospital and while there she developed an interest in deprived children who were deemed ‘idiot children’ at that time. Studying the major works of educational theorists, she became convinced through her observations that all children were capable of reaching their potential when given real objects and didactic materials within a prepared environment.
Montessori established the first Casa Bambina (Children’s House) in 1907 in the slum area of Rome and by 1913 there were over 100 Montessori schools established in the USA. Today it is estimated that there are over 20,000 Montessori schools and kindergartens worldwide.
